RETRO CHIC OF SWINGING SIXTIES LONDON, CELEBRATED ON DVD

“If you can remember anything about the sixties, you weren’t really there.” (Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane)

Where else can you see original footage from the wedding of Tommy Steele, attended by guests such as Sid James; through to the Small Faces larking around in a Carnaby Street fashion store?

Life in London during the 1960s is today brought out of the archives and into our lives, with the launch of two brand new DVD titles from Timereel Studios.  ‘London in the Sixties’, Parts One and Two, are documentary-style reflections of what life was really like for Londoners during this seminal era; created using archive footage, much of it that has never been seen before.

From the launch of the first Mini Cooper at Earls Court, to the wedding of Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman; England winning the World Cup in 1966 to the Rolling Stones leaving West Ham magistrates court after being charged with ‘insulting behaviour’. These are just some of the headline moments in our popular culture remembered in these two nostalgic films.

Pivotal celebrity moments intermingle with anecdotes from everyday people; such as Frank Perry’s account of being carted off to a police station and fined £1 under the ‘Uniform Act’, simply for wearing a marine jacket.

So much more than Mini Coopers and mini skirts; as well as capturing an essence of change and excitement, more serious issues of the day are also explored.  There is a look back at London’s thriving docks and their subsequent demise; the history of markets such as Billingsgate; industrial disputes; housing and homelessness; anti-Vitenam riots and the rise of racial tension in the decade, all covered within this original footage.

Andrew Gray, Timereel Studios’ founder; writer, director and producer of ‘London in the Sixties’, said: “These two unique London titles are vivid portraits of a poignant era in this great City’s history.  People who were around in the sixties may well have first-hand memories of events featured; and for those who missed out on the experiences, the films will provide compelling insight.”
