ACTORS TAKE TO LONDON’S STREETS AS TIMEREEL STUDIOS IS STOCKED IN EUROPE’S LARGEST BOOKSTORE

If you happen to be heading down to the Capital this weekend, you might be forgiven for wondering if the British World War II soldier hanging out at Piccadilly Circus is absent without leave in the wrong time-zone.  Or indeed if Paul McCartney in his Sergeant Pepper outfit is really meant to be strutting around Trafalgar Square as he is?  In fact these, and other characters from our history, will really be actors playing their part in celebrating what is a massive coup for Norwich-based Timereel Studios.  From today (Saturday 11 December 2010), DVDs from the film production company, which specialises in producing documentary-style films from original archive material, will be stocked in both Waterstone’s Trafalgar Square and Waterstone’s Piccadilly – Europe’s largest bookstore.

The full range of ‘London’ DVD titles in Timereel’s collection, 18 in total, will be available in each store.  From the story of The Krays in ‘We Ruled London’; to first-hand experiences of what life was like for Londoners living through some extraordinary times, during the Second World War in ‘London’s War’; ‘London in the Thirties’; ‘London in the Fifties’ and ‘London in the Sixties’.  Each film, carefully crafted using original archive film, will resonate with people who can remember these eras first-hand, and provide a fascinating insight for those seeing the highlights of these periods for the first time.

Andrew Gray, Timereel’s founder and producer of the London films, said: “We pride ourselves on bringing to the screen documentaries with a difference; unique and evocative films.  Often the material we use to create our films will never have been seen before.  Until a year or so ago we produced our titles using original archive footage mainly from the East Anglian Film Archive; which allowed us to develop a collection of films reminding us of some historical milestones in East Anglia; from life on the Norfolk Coast during the 1920s to Norwich in the Sixties.”  Andrew continues: “In early 2010 we struck an exclusive deal with ITN Source allowing us access to nationwide archive material; which has enabled us to produce a collection of titles about a much wider geographical area.  The fact that the full range of our London titles is now being stocked in Waterstone’s stores, including Trafalgar Square and their flagship Piccadilly store, is a testament to the quality and calibre of the films themselves.”

Andrew concludes: “Moving into 2011 our focus will be on continuing to develop the range of titles covering London and the South East, as well as East Anglia and other regions in the UK.  Plus there are some exciting national titles in the pipeline too which is new territory for us.”

Timereel is unlike its competitors in that it handles the whole film-making and distribution process in house;  generating the idea for a film; research and script writing; production; partnering with cinema groups such as Picturehouse; distributing the titles through high street retailers including HMV and Waterstone’s and selling direct to customers online.

The thing that all Timereel films have in common is that they show how major historic events and changes in society affected ordinary people.  The range of local history titles are particularly fascinating as they allow us to step back in time and remember how villages, towns and cities – including London – have changed in the last 100 years.
